Even if you have spent time decorating your home, you might still notice a little something missing—the lighting! Even the best decorated room is incomplete without the proper lighting, and you can use the lighting in a room to create a desired atmosphere. If done properly, lighting can enhance the furniture, bring out the color on the walls and set the mood.

Decide what type of lighting you want to use in each room of your home. Choose lighting for specific tasks, such as crafts, or to create a certain type of atmosphere.

Make a room look larger by using lighting effects. To do this, allow the light from a lamp to directly hit the ceiling.

Create a cozy feel to a room by using low lighting that does not hit the ceiling. Candles can also create this effect.

Display artwork or portraits by using accent lighting. Buy several accent lights in order to spotlight these special pieces on your walls.

Consider safety when making your lighting purchases. Hallways and stairways should be properly lit. Pot lights along the stairs will provide the best lighting, but a light at the top of the stairs works as well.

Consider all aspects of the lighting in a room. This includes the amount and direction of natural lighting, the number of outlets in a room and the placement of the furniture.
Bad lighting can cause squinting and headaches. Make sure you have enough light in rooms that you plan to do close activities, such as reading.
