Alcoholics Anonymous is a group dedicated to helping people who are ready to overcome alcohol addiction. Membership is free, and anyone is welcome. A.A. has no political or institutional affiliation. Meetings are held worldwide and are relatively easy to find.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Look in the yellow pages of the local directory. Look under "Alcoholism" and find nearly two hundred locations for alcoholism counseling in New York City. If this seems too daunting, look under "Alcoholics Anonymous." Call these number to find local meeting times and locations.
Step2
Contact the New York City's Alcoholics Anonymous Intergroup Office. The Intergroup office coordinates activities for various individual area meetings. There is also a national online Intergroup.
Step3
Check with local police stations and hospitals. Both places will have meeting schedules.
Step4
Visit area churches and places of worship. Churches will usually have information on A.A. meetings and may even hold their own support groups. Since Alcoholics Anonymous has no religious affiliation, this may be an option for additional spiritual support.
Step5
Visit Alcoholics Anonymous World Services website. It has tons of information on meetings, programs and alcoholism for local areas. For New York City listings, click the tab that reads "How to Find A.A. Meetings." This will lead to a link for local listings. Then choose "New York." The services are listed in alphabetical order by the name of the city where the program resides.
Step6
Ask a physician. Physicians will also remain confidential, and will provide information and even advice. They may even have meeting schedules. They may also have more information on the health issues involved with heavy drinking.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't hesitate in getting help. Everything is confidential, and there are many people out there eager to help.
  • In New York City, there are even programs specifically designed for the Spanish-speaking population.
