Step 1
Limit where you go, unless you have time to spare. Australia is an enormous country. Determine the best activities based on the time of year you plan to go. Then decide the most noteworthy areas that you can visit during the time you have on the continent.
-
Step 2
Learn how to read an Australian menu. Main courses are American main courses. Entree means appetizer.
-
Step 3
Enjoy outdoor activities. Attend a local sports event. Cricket is played in the summer, which is October - March. Australian-rules football is also an option. The best place to go diving is the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system.
-
Step 4
Look to your right before crossing a road. Stepping on a road can be dangerous if you instinctively look left because people drive on the left side of the road in Australia.
-
Step 5
Learn the rules of the road. Go to local automotive association to get a copy of the Highway Code for any state or territory in which you plan to drive. Carry plenty of water if you drive through the Outback; also tell someone your schedule and itinerary.
-
Step 6
Make train reservations well in advance. This is especially true from November through February which is peak tourist season. Advance purchase of tickets can mean a significant discount. Reservations between major cities tend to be full far in advance. Call the appropriate Rail Australian office or your travel agent.
