How to Get Headshots Taken

So you've decided to become an actor, but you're not quite sure where to begin. Every actor, whether in movies, television or theater has a headshot. It is an actor's introduction. It's the first impression you'll make on an agent or casting director before you even walk in the door.

Instructions

1. Surf the web. With the advancements in digital imaging today almost every photographer has an extensive online website. This is the best place to become familiar with their work. When searching, try and designate the area in which you'd like your headshots taken. There are fantastic photographers everywhere. If you live in Los Angeles, you don't have to go to New York for great photos.

2. Make a list of your top five favorite photographers.

3. Contact each of the photographers. When speaking with them, be sure to discuss the specifics of the shoot so that you are on the same page. Discuss the number of photos they will take during the session, number of different poses, whether you are striving for commercial or theatrical photos, if you need make-up or hair done on location and price. If the photographer cannot answer any one of these questions in regard to taking headshots, continue your search.

4. Pick your photographer. Set up a time when the two of you will shoot.

5. Choose your clothing. After your conversation with the photographer, you should have a pretty good idea of which styles you are going to accomplish. Formal attire, casual, smiling and serious are all looks the photographer might try and cover. Pick attire appropriate for each.

6. Communicate with your photographer. When you arrive on time be sure to offer to get right into hair and make-up if they are part of the session. If not, offer to show the photographer your selection of clothes. Work with the photographer and keep an open mind as you finalize your wardrobe for your headshots.

7. Have fun! This is your moment to shine. As the shoot progresses be open to the suggestions of the photographer as he or she will know how to shoot you to look your best.

Tips & Warnings

• Consider getting your hair cut or styled before your shoot. Some shoots will not include hair and make-up. If this is the case, get your hair cut prior to the shoot so that it will look it's best.

• Consider taking a friend or parent with you on the shoot. While most photographers are reputable, safety in numbers is always a good strategy. Most photographers will not have a problem with someone sitting in.

• You should never be forced to do nudity or something you are not comfortable with. If the photographer ever begins to suggest something with which you are not comfortable, speak up or end the session.
