Instructions

    • 1

Prepare for electricity differences by purchasing the correct plug adaptors from an electronics store before you leave home so that you can charge your cell phone while in Hong Kong. Hong Kong uses plug types "G" and "M."

    • 2

Acquire a transformer that can handle 220 volts, which is the voltage used in Hong Kong, to use when charging your cell phone. Your cell phone will likely fry if you do not use the correct transformer.

    • 3

Notify your cell phone provider, and inform them that you will be traveling to Hong Kong. Ask to be upgraded to international roaming if possible.

    • 4

Consider renting a cell phone or SIM card to use with your personal cell phone if your cellular company does not offer coverage in Hong Kong.

    • 5

Know how to dial locally within Hong Kong. Hong Kong doesn not have any area codes, so you just simply dial the phone number.

    • 6

Learn how to call the United States from Hong Kong. First dial "001" (this is the international prefix to dial outside of China). Then dial "1" (this is the international code used to dial to the U.S.). Follow that by the area code and phone number.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to charge your cell phone each night using the correct plug adaptor and transformer.

This article doesn't even tell you that Hong Kong operates on a different frequency for its networks, which is a more advanced one, and a lot of cell phone models in the US/Canada cannot adapt to that network.
