Making grape plasma is a simple science experiment you can do with your microwave. There are few chances in life to actually see a plasma cloud which makes this a must try for any science buff. There are some inherent dangers with this experiment so please perform it only under adult supervision and understand the risks ahead of time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knife
  • Paper towel
  • Grapes
  • Microwave
  1. Step 1

Cut a grape in half so that you have a top and bottom, not two sides.

  2. Step 2

Set the bottom half on the counter so the narrow end is down, like a bowl.

  3. Step 3

Slice this part of the grape in half again, leaving a small piece at the bottom to still connect the two pieces.

  4. Step 4

Place the split grape piece into a microwave oven and open it up so that the two pieces are not touching except by the small sliver you left in the last step.

  5. Step 5

Turn the microwave on for five seconds and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Ventilate the area well, and have a fire extinguisher on hand.
  • Capture the plasma in an upside down glass over the grape for a magnificent effect.
  • This may take several attempts to work, so keep trying.
  • If you have trouble, try dabbing the grape on a paper towel before microwaving.
  • Eat the top half, it is good for you!
  • This experiment emits Ozone, a noxious gas, so ventilate the area properly. You could be injured or killed.
  • Your microwave can be damaged.
  • In rare circumstances, a fire could result.
