The University of Alabama was founded in 1831 in Tuscaloosa, the newly formed state's capital city. The school started with a class of 52 students and today has close to 24,000 students on a 1,000 acre site. Montgomery is now the capital of Alabama and Tuscaloosa is considered a warm and congenial college town with all the advantages of a big city.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Start your visit by going over to The Quad, the outdoor meeting place. Mingle with some of the students, relax, take a nap under the trees or just enjoy the scenery. The grounds of the Quad lie above buildings destroyed by fire during the Civil War.
Step2
Get a free education by browsing through one of many libraries on the UA campus. Stop at the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library, the Angelo Bruno Business Library or any of the other libraries with a focus on special collections, science and engineering, health sciences or law. Do not miss the Placenames Research Center, one of only two facilities in the United States that research toponymics, the study of the name of a place's origin.
Step3
Wear the school colors of red and white to the Bryant-Denny Stadium and watch the famous Crimson Tide football team. The nickname Crimson Tide comes from an Alabama-Auburn game in 1948 that UA was expected to lose. The UA team managed to tie Auburn even though the conditions of the football field left the team's players covered in red mud. The University has increased the stadium's capacity six times since it was built in 1929.
Step4
Relax at the Ferguson Student Union, home to most of the University's organizations and also a place to wind down, have social events and network with fellow students.
Step5
Take home a copy of the Crimson White Newspaper, a great way to learn more about the school. The Crimson White has been published by the University of Alabama since 1894.
