Horse racing is a fun sport to watch and can also be enjoyable to wager on. For a beginner, it may seem difficult to choose the winners of a race. With a few simple tips, you can increase your odds at picking the winning horses.

From Quick Guide: Horse Sports
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Race history
  • Stable and trainer name
  • Name of jockey
  1. Step 1

Look at the horse's race history. It is important to look at what horses it has won against in past races. If it is competing against a horse that it has won against previously, it is likely to win again. The distances that the horse has won at in earlier races are another thing to keep in mind before placing your bet.

  2. Step 2

Find out the name of the stable that owns the horse. Horses from large and successful stables are more likely to have access to better equipment and trainers.

  3. Step 3

Research the horse's trainer. Looking at the trainer's experience can let you know their success with past horses and the number of years that he has been in the field.

  4. Step 4

Check out the jockey riding the horse. A jockey with several wins under the belt will be more likely to pull out another win.

  5. Step 5

Read the daily picks. Horse racing programs at race tracks and online websites will offer their winning picks. These picks are usually well researched and can be considered safe bets.

Tips & Warnings
  • Finding out all of the horse's information and using it to predict the race is called handicapping the horse.
  • Always look at the odds. Taking chances on horses with greater odds can offer a big payout.
  • Placing exacta and trifecta bets is an effective way of winning more money at the racetrack.
