The weather is nice, the grill is hot and the neighbors are coming over for the afternoon. When it comes to entertaining, having an event or game for your guests really helps the party along. And by adding a few extra touches, you can transform your backyard into something that looks almost like a professional volleyball court.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Lawn mower
  • Volleyball net and stakes
  • Volleyball
  • Spray paint or spreadable lime

Step1
Cut the grass. Not only will a nice clean yard make your party seem more appealing, but short grass, less then an inch, is ideal for backyard volleyball. It allows for a layer of cushioning for the sliding or diving play, while also not being so long that your guests find it difficult to move around.
Step2
Set up a net. Whether you need to purchase one from your local sporting goods store, or you already have one, be sure to follow the instructions carefully when setting up the net. The stakes which hold the volleyball net must be firmly placed in the ground.
Step3
Blow up the ball. Make sure the ball is properly inflated before you begin play. It should be firm, without being hard.
Step4
Line your yard. For a nice touch that will impress your party guests, line your volleyball court with either spreadable lime or spray paint. This will also help avoid conflict during the game as you'll clearly be able to see if a ball is in or out. While the important thing is that each side of the net is equal in size, the actual dimensions of a volleyball court are fifty-nine feet by twenty-nine and a half feet. The net should split that distance in the middle.

Tips & Warnings

  • If possible provide padding for the poles which hold the net in place. Sporting good stores sell wraparound padding separately.
  • After cutting the grass, check your yard for rocks or other debris that may be dangerous to your guests. Remove as much as possible.
  • If there is a rock that cannot be removed, be sure to point it out to your guests before you begin play.
