    • Piano
    • Musical instrument
    • Recordings of songs
    1. Sing in Tune with a Piano

      • 1

Play a key on the piano. Make sure it's not too high or low for your voice. Middle C is a good place to start. If this is too high or too low try and octave lower or higher. Try to sing the note along with the piano.

      • 2

Listen to your note and the piano's note together. If you're in tune, you should here a pleasant smooth sound as you match up with the piano. If your voice has a grating or grinding quality you're out of tune. Sing the note a little lower or higher until you blend in with the piano and you're singing the same note in tune.

      • 3

Rehearse a C major scale up the keyboard and back playing each note: CDEFGABC and back. Sing along with each note and make sure every note is in tune by listening carefully.

      • 4

Choose individual random notes on the piano and sing in tune with them.

      • 5

Play chords. Play a simple major triad like C major: CEG. Sing each note in the chord: C, then E then G. Make sure all sound pleasantly in tune.

      • 6

Sing a note in the chord, while playing the other notes in the chord. For example, play E and G but sing the C yourself. If you're in tune it will sound nice with the other notes.

Other Ways to Sing in Tune

    Tips & Warnings

    • This tuning can be done on a piano, a keyboard or with a guitar. Someone else can play an instrument and you can sing along.

    • Even if you don't know how to read music, or know about scales or chords, you can still play around with the piano and try singing along with it.

    • Practice each step many times until you're good at it, then move on to the next.

    • Some people have good ears and can do this easily. Other people require more practice.

    • If you're going to listen or sing along with music, make sure it's music where the performers are playing and singing in tune. Jazz, classical and pop music are good examples.
