How to Appreciate and Understand Poetry

Whether it's the impressionistic style of E.E. Cummings or the magnificent work of Milton, anyone can learn to understand and appreciate poetry. There are as many styles as there are poets, so everyone can find a form of poetry that they love.

      Buy or borrow a book of poetry containing a collection of the most famous poems by various poets.

      Take time each day to read a poem or two.

      Make a poetry notebook by journaling what you think of each poem. Note an asterisk by some of your favorites reminding yourself to read more of a particular poet's work.

      Find books with preferred types of poetry if you notice a particular kind of poetry that you seem to understand or appreciate. Some examples include sonnets, Victorian and freestyle.

      Read other collections. You may learn to appreciate a variety of poetry.
