Heirlooms by definition are family possessions handed down from generation to generation, but it’s so much more than that. An heirloom is a piece of family history that can bring tears and laughter because it carries memories and feelings with it that can not be defined or expressed in words.

Here’s an idea; be the generation that creates modern heirlooms, they have to start somewhere right? Be the initiator. Here’s one way to start.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Embroidery thread, hoop, needles
  • Stamps, ink
  • Fabric pens
  • White table cloth
  1. Step 1

Begin with a simple white tablecloth sized to fit your dining table. Check out places like Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens-N-Things to find classic versions.

  2. Step 2

Collect the following craft supplies: Rubber stamps, colored ink pads, fabric markers, embroidery thread, hoops and needles. This is all available through Michaels.

  3. Step 3

Here’s how it all comes together: For your next get together set the table with the simple white tablecloth and place the craft supplies around the table--some at guest place settings and some in the middle of the table. Invite everyone to sign, doodle, graffiti, etc directly on the table. You’ll see a bit of the usual like “Dad’s Seat” or “Steve was here” but make sure to circle spills and stains as well. Draw pictures, play games and do what feels right. The tablecloth is your canvas and the event is your inspiration.

  4. Step 4

After the event, embroider the writings and pictures on the cloth so that they become part of its design. The next time you host the get together, use the same cloth but seat everyone in a different place so they can read the cloth and remember what went on the last time you were together. It’s like a canvas that documents your holidays and special occasions; a tapestry of your social life.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you’re not one for embroidery, send the cloth out to an embroidery company and they can do the work for you.
  • If you don’t think the family will get the ball rollin’ on their own draw a few things on the cloth yourself so that they get the idea.
