The oldest form of quilting is done by hand. This is a practice that has been in use for centuries and very little has changed in that time with regards to the tools required as well as the style of stitching. By stitching through the three layers of a traditional quilt--the quilt backing, the batting and the quilt top--hand quilting is one of the final steps in completing a quilt project.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thread
  • Quilt top
  • Thimble
  • Batting
  • Quilting hoop or frame
  • Needle
  • Quilt backing
  1. Step 1

Trace your quilting pattern onto the right side of the quilt top using a water soluble ink pen or pencil.

  2. Step 2

Layer the quilt pieces by placing the quilt backing right side down on a flat surface, followed by the quilt batting and the quilt top. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles in each layer.

  3. Step 3

Pin the layers together from the center of the quilt outwards to prevent creating bubbles or wrinkles in the finished project.

  4. Step 4

Load the quilt into a hoop or frame following the manufacturer's directions. You may also quilt without a hoop or frame, however, the likelihood of developing bubbles in the layers is greatly increased.

  5. Step 5

Utilize an evenly spaced running stitch to sew through all 3 layers of the quilt. This can be done by inserting your threaded needle at a right angle into the quilt layers, stopping at the point when the tip of the needle breaks through the back of the quilt. Rock the needle upwards and back through all three layers to complete the stitch.

  6. Step 6

Stitch along the lines you have traced to complete the design of your quilting pattern. Tie off the thread by tying a knot about 1- to 2-inches above the quilt top and inserting your needle into the hole of the last stitch taken. Work the needle inside the batting layer for about 1-inch and then pull the needle through the top and cut the thread. This will encase the knot inside the batting layer, making an invisible tie-off.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are a beginner, pick out a simple quilting pattern for your first project. The simplest patterns involve straight lines.
