Step 1
Decide what kind of needlepoint project you would like to complete. If you want to do a sampler, a single sheet of canvas fabric is all that is required. However, if you want to needlepoint chair cushions, you will need to calculate the amount of yardage necessary to complete the project.
-
Step 2
Look at your local needlepoint supply or hobby shop for ideas for needlepoint patterns. You may also find pattern ideas at your local library. Most patterns can be traced directly onto the foundation canvas by placing it on top of the original and using a pencil or pen to outline the design.
-
Step 3
Purchase needles that are the correct gauge. Needlepoint needles are generally blunt-tipped but may come in a variety of widths with the most narrow appropriate for fine work and the widest more helpful for needlepoint using thick or multiple strands of floss or yarn.
-
Step 4
Make sure you have a pair of good, small embroidery scissors for clipping threads. Many models come with convenient holders or chatelaines that may be worn around the neck for easy access while sewing.
-
Step 5
Select a frame that is suited to your project. Long yardage projects require a scrolling frame while smaller projects can be easily completed on a stretcher. Look for a stretcher that is slightly smaller than the overall size of your foundation cloth or canvas.
-
Step 6
Find a bag to store your needlepoint equipment in if you plan on traveling with it. You should be able to select from a variety of bags with assorted pocket sizes for thread, needles, scissors and all your needlepoint accoutrements.
