Military history holds an undeniable fascination for most people. Whether or not you approve of war as a method of resolving conflict, the unshakable fact that human history is bound up in the practice of war makes it an intriguing anthropological phenomena. The history of battles and battalions goes well beyond mere curiosity for many. This is why vintage military toys (those toys made before 1970) have such a following among collectors. From miniature rifles to tiny replica uniforms, you can recreate your own Battle of Bunker Hill or any other famous skirmish when you collect vintage military toys.

Let the Battle Begin!

1. Learn what is out there. Vintage military toys come in all shapes and sizes. From plastic soldiers to die-cast tanks and trucks to tiny wooden bayonets, it is all there for the taking. Check out eBay (see Resources below) or visit your local library to find books on vintage toys to find out what your options are for your collection.

2. Become familiar with the brands. Over the years, some common brands have emerged in the production of military toys. Dinky, Corgi and Franklin Mint are among the better known of these brand names. Some people collect just one particular brand. Whether you decide to do likewise or not, it helps you to know what you want by finding out what was produced by which company. Your local library can be a valuable resource.

3. Visit an antique store. You can often find great vintage military toys. Be sure to visit your local stores and ask the owners to give you a call when they get new vintage military toys in stock.

4. Look in the classified ads. Your local newspaper's classified ads will often contain listings from people with vintage military toys to sell. You can also find local classified ads on Craigslist (see Resources below).
