One of the most important pieces of equipment that a beekeeper can own is a line of appropriate beekeeping apparel. Not only does a vest and veil or hood offer obvious protection, but it also helps to keep the hive calm when changing out trays and frames from the hive foundation. Be wise about this investment by learning how to properly select beekeeping apparel.

Learn How to Select Beekeeping Apparel

  1. Step 1

Be smart. When it comes to beekeeping apparel, more is better. So, don't try to skimp on apparel just to save a few dollars. Generally, your apparel collection should consist of a full beekeeping vest (sometimes called a blouse), a hood (detachable is preferred) and full-length gloves.

  2. Step 2

Be safe. Select your beekeeping apparel online from a reliable source that provides secure Internet shopping. Bee Commerce has an online catalog with a variety of beekeeping apparel and accessories (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Be covered. Consider full protection with a head-to-toe beekeeping suit from Bee Commerce. This is especially important if you are allergic or sensitive to bee stings (or simply don't care to be stung in the first place).

  4. Step 4

Be sure to select the right size when purchasing beekeeping apparel, especially when it comes to gloves. Trying to maneuver your equipment, supplies and honey combs with ill-fitting gloves can lead to problems.

  5. Step 5

Be aware that most veils and hoods designed for beekeepers are generally one-size-fits-all. A detachable hood is best too since it's easier to clean and its removal offers you some relief on those warm summer days while your tending your bees.

  6. Step 6

Be comfortable. Select ventilated vests and hoods to allow air to circulate while you're wearing them.

  7. Step 7

Be courteous to visitors. Add a pocket veil to your list of beekeeping apparel to keep on hand when a guest or visitor is in the proximity of your bees. The veil is designed to work with almost any cap or hat and is small enough to keep in your pocket or in the glove compartment of your car.

  8. Step 8

Be thrifty. Canvas gloves offer as much protection as goatskin or leather but are about half the price.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your beekeeping apparel clean and in good condition to ensure years of use.
  • When purchasing beekeeping apparel, look for signs of good quality, such as sturdy stitching, rustproof nylon zippers, and boning to maintain the shape of hoods.

on 10/12/2007 As a beekeeper, I can tell you that canvas, goatskin, and cowhide gloves are not created equally. Bees can sting right through canvas and goatskin gloves. In my opinion, if you want protection, go for the cowhide ones!
