Numerology is a science that explores the meaning of numbers and their role in personal life. You might be surprised that numerology includes an analysis of names, which is used to determine your personal lucky numbers. However, the alphabet is a logical system just like numbers, and by decoding letters with numbers, they can be put to powerful use in the practice of numerology.

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper and pen
  • Name numerology chart
  • Online or print reference material

How to Determine the Numerology of Your Name

  1. Step 1

Understand the basics of name numerology. You will use a chart to designate each letter of your name with a "core," or single-digit, number. These charts can be found online or in books and may vary from those in this article (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Know the fundamental formula of numerology. When you wish to determine a personal number, you will first add designated numbers and digits together. Then you will reduce them to "core" numbers between 1 and 9 (except for 11 and 22, which are "master" numbers).

  3. Step 3

Practice on this example. Suppose your name is Mary, and the chart has decoded the letters as: 4, 1, 9 and 7. To get your name number (sometimes called your destiny or energetic number), add the digits together: 4+1+9+7=21.

  4. Step 4

Reduce the new, two-digit number to a core number by adding the digits together: 2+1=3. In this example, 3 is the name numerology number.

  5. Step 5

Determine the numerology of your full name or signature name by consulting a solid reference, such as Astrology-Numerology.com, for an easy-to-use chart (see Resources below). Then have fun learning about what those numbers mean to your future.

Tips & Warnings
  • You're likely to find name numerology extremely easy to grasp, even if you are mathematically challenged.
  • Choose between name numerology systems that use your full name (as recorded on your birth certificate) or those that call for your name as you usually sign it on paper.
  • Learn more about "master" numbers in detailed publications.
  • Numerology charts and terms may differ from source to source, but if you choose one and stick with it, you'll get the best results.
  • Many numerologists use their own specific language, so it may vary from the basic terms you read here, while definitions remain the same. (It won't take long to learn the new lingo.)
