Sudoku, which was invented in 1979 by an American named Howard Garns, is a challenging game of logic. The first sudoku puzzles appeared in newspapers, magazines and in specialty books, but today, there are thousands of websites dedicated to providing players with unlimited sudoku puzzles online. Some sites even allow users to generate their own games for unlimited playing possibilities.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Access a website with plenty of online sudoku puzzles, such as Sudoku.com (see Resources below). You'll have the chance to play a variety of sudoku puzzles, from easy to samurai level (very difficult).
Step2
Decide which type of sudoku you want to play. Surprisingly, there are several different types of sudoku. Alphadoku swaps numbers for letters, killer sudoku involves adding up connected cells and irregular sudoku tricks your eyes by changing the layout of the grids.
Step3
Determine the difficulty level you want. Beginners usually do best with a basic three-by-three grid. For those who want more of a challenge, there are also intermediate and advanced puzzles, as well as a samurai sudoku with five puzzles connected together.
Step4
Use a generator for those times when you don't have a specific puzzle in mind. You can select your preferences in drop-down boxes and a unique sudoku puzzle will be created to suit your tastes.
Step5
Write down the numbers of puzzles you particularly enjoy, or those you don't have time to complete. You can come back to the website at a later time and finish working on the puzzle. You can also use repeat puzzles to hone your skills when you want to move up to more advanced levels.
Step6
Print out several puzzles once you've found some you like. Then you can work on solving them in your leisure time, while making a train or bus commute, or as part of a family game night.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless you're visiting a website that allows you to save your game and return at a later time, you should plan to allot roughly one to two hours to finish the sudoku puzzle you select, depending on how well you play and the difficulty level you've selected.
  • If you don't mind continuing on paper, print out your half-finshed puzzle and finish it at your leisure.
  • When playing sudoku online, remember that power outages or disturbances in your Internet connection may cause you to lose access to your game. In these cases, you may have to start all over with a fresh puzzle.
