How to Play Hero Champions

Champions is a role playing game developed by Hero Games. It was one of the first games to allow players to craft their own characters rather than relying on chance through dice rolls. The rules for the game are fairly generic, leaving interpretation mostly up to the Game Master. This allows players to build the exact kind of game world they want and create very specific characters. If you have always wanted to create a comic book hero, Hero Champions is a game you should try playing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

• Several six-sided dice
• Two or more players
• Copy of Hero Champions
• Adventurer's sheet

1. Locate some friends or family who enjoy role playing games. Two people is the minimum amount needed to play Hero Champions, but having three or more can make the game more enjoyable.
2. Decide who will be the Game Master. Hero Champions plays a little differently than traditional role playing games, so consider selecting someone with experience.
3. Locate the adventurer's sheet included with the game. You can also make your own or download sheets from the Hero Games website (see Resources below). Also available at the official website are discussion boards where you can get help with the game, and free live chat rooms.
4. Determine what kind of character you would like to play. You are building a super hero, much like the ones in comics and the movies. Your character will be defined by the effects of his or her powers, rather than the mechanism used to create the effect. For example, characters that use magic or have ice powers both emit an energy blast. To create characters like these, you need to build an expert in energy blasts.
5. Design your character using the character points you are provided with. Use the points to increase the personal characteristics of your character, such as agility and charisma. You can also use points to give your character special skills or to begin building super powers.
6. Begin the game under the leadership of the Game Master. Participate in quests and other actions to increase your character points and continue building your character.

Tips & Warnings

• During the character creation process, you will also need to decide what disadvantages your character will have. Be careful what you select to avoid choosing something that will counteract your character's super power.
