Step 1
Find a freeroll poker game to play in. Many of them are online games hosted by various poker websites. To help you find one more easily, try visiting the Pokerlistings website (see Resources below). It lists a variety of poker places and even ranks them. You might also check with casinos or other gambling areas to see if there are any in-person freeroll games available to play.
-
Step 2
Learn what kind of poker game is being played. Since there is no entry fee, you might consider using this opportunity to try a new variation of poker, one that you are not as good at. It costs you nothing if you perform poorly, but playing the game under tournament conditions is a great learning experience. You can also try using a new strategy on your favorite games. However, if a freeroll tournament is the only time you are able to play for prize money, then stick to what you know best.
-
Step 3
Determine if the game is offline or online. Adjust your strategy accordingly and make sure you are able to attend. Check your computer to make sure it's running properly before starting an online tournament.
-
Step 4
Check and see what prize money will be awarded. A really low amount may not be worth your time, while a large amount is very enticing. Also consider if the prize has value besides the monetary award. Receiving a free entrance into an even better tournament, for example, could be worth a lot of money if that tournament has a high entrance fee.
-
Step 5
Find out how many people will be playing. When there is no cap placed on entrants, the game could conceivably last too long for you to be able to play. Chances are, however, that the entrance is limited. When this is the case, make sure you register before the tournament entries are closed.
