A pool party can be just the activity for a hot summer's day. Whether the celebration is meant for adults or children, you can plan a pool party that can range from a relaxing lounge by the water to a wild night of music and dancing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Floating devices
  • Swimming pool
  • Volleyball net and ball
  • Pool net cleaner

    Prepare Your Pool Area

  1. Step 1

Clear the area around your pool of any debris, weeds or other obstructions so guests can move about freely and walk barefoot without worry.

  2. Step 2

Use a 6- to 10-foot net pool cleaner to skim the surface of your pool to rid it of bugs, leaves and floating objects. You'll want your swimming pool to look its sparkling best when your guests arrive.

  3. Step 3

Use a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle to spray your pool lounge furniture clean. Allow to sun dry for at least a half hour before using.

  4. Step 4

Set up a table with a DJ or just your iPod with a mix of pool-related tunes from artists like Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet and the Beach Boys. If your guests represent a span of generations, make sure to include tunes from different eras: Your teenage guests will likely tolerate the Beach Boys much more happily if you include a little Jack Johnson, too.

  5. Play Pool Games

  6. Step 1

Set up a volleyball net across the middle of your pool to play water volleyball. Dick's Sporting Goods sells these items online for an inexpensive price (see resources below).

  7. Step 2

Have a cannonball contest to see who can splash water the furthest outside of the pool. The winner can win a pool-related prize, like a lei or a shell necklace.

  8. Step 3

Plan games according to the age of your guests. For young children, the games should remain in the shallow end of the pool and involve only those kids comfortable being in the water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let your guests know about your party through email to save on invitation costs. Evite is a popular Web-based invitation site that allows you to quickly add guests to your list and see who's coming (see resources below).
  • Keep plenty of towels on hand so that guests don't have to wander around your home soaking wet.
  • Be sure that small children are properly supervised and protected in the water. Provide floating devices and inflatable life jackets to those who require such protection.
  • All guests should plan to wear sunblock to prevent prolonged exposure to the sun. SPF 30 is minimum for average skin tones, while SPF 45 is recommended for pale skin.
