In a perfect world for the vision impaired, menus and birthday cards would automatically come in large print. Since this isn't a perfect world, one must adapt as necessary. Crossword puzzles can present a special challenge to the vision impaired, however. Fortunately, crossword puzzle lovers do have options available to them.

See the bigger picture by using a portable video magnifier to view your crossword puzzles. These devices are small, lightweight and can be connected to a television or computer monitor via a USB port. You can also adjust the size of the print as needed.

Shop for large print crossword puzzle books made specially for people who are vision impaired. Many book stores and stationary outlets carry of variety of large print puzzle books to select from. In fact, the popular New York Times crossword puzzles are published in a large print omnibus.

Play large print crossword puzzles at FiftiesWeb online (see Resources below). There are several categories available and the puzzle and clues are extra large for easy viewing.

Visit the website for the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for additional interactive large print crossword puzzles to play (see Resources below). Just click on the title of the featured puzzle to bring the daily puzzle into view.

Join the Large Print Crosswords Club, where members receive 6 puzzles each month that are printed 75 percent larger than regular puzzles and on non-glare paper (see Resources below).

Ask your local library if it has a large print viewer available for you to use if purchasing a portable video magnifier or shopping online isn't an option for you. Many public libraries receive donated funds or equipment to aid the vision impaired and make such equipment available to the general public during regular business hours.
