How to Select Craps Strategies

At its core, craps is really a simple game--not to mention an old one. However, over the years, the various strategies used to play craps have expanded. While many players prefer to stick with one particular system (often their own), there are times when a player might want to select other strategies. Whether you're a novice or expert, it's always a good idea to know how to select craps strategies.

Recognize that the following steps assume that you are already fairly proficient in playing craps, or that at least you understand the rules of play. If you're a beginning player and need to become familiar with basic strategies of play, then refer to Basic Craps published online by Gambling Times (see Resources below).

Try the basic "don't come" strategy. In this scenario, let's assume that the point is 6 and that you've placed a $5 bet on the don't pass line. At the same time, you place $5 in the don't come box and another $5 on the odds. If the roll turns up a 7, you lose the $5 don't come, but you also win $10 on the don't pass for a gain of $5. The point is to make a win on a rolled 7 a sure thing, where otherwise you would only break even.

Play 3 and out. Using this strategy, you place a bet on every other number but the 7 and another on the field. Obviously, a "lucky" roll of 7 early in the game is a loss to you. On the other hand, you make a nice profit if whatever number you bet on comes up. However, you should remove your bets after the third roll to reduce the risk of the 7 appearing. Mathematical probability dictates that a 7 can be expected to appear within six rolls.

Stay in place when considering craps strategies. The safest craps bets are place bets because they can be removed at any time, and you're in control of the numbers. In fact, the odds that you'll roll a specific number once are much greater than trying to repeat the number before a 7 comes out.

  • Set a limit on how much you can afford to lose so you don't walk away from the craps table with empty pockets.
