Baby showers don't have to include games.

Baby showers became common after World War II during the baby boom of the 1950s, and shower games were a standard activity. While many baby showers today still feature some of the traditions and etiquette of the past, a modern host is free to include or eliminate anything that doesn't suit her vision of the perfect shower. Throwing a baby shower with no games allows the host to use other nontraditional ideas to make the event memorable for the guests and the mom-to-be.

Step 1

Incorporate elements such as color, decor, invitation style and food to compliment a unique baby shower theme. Themes can be elegant, casual, modern or any combination of ideas that the host likes, including things unique to the mom-to-be, such as nursery design or foods she has craved during her pregnancy.

Step 2

Go completely modern and plan a shower without games or any traditional elements. Use bright colors instead of pastels, invite the guys as well as the girls, feature non-fussy foods instead of tea sandwiches, and serve pie instead of the traditional cake.

Step 3

Ask each guest to write her top piece of new-baby advice or a special memory of her relationship with the mom-to-be on an index card when she arrives. Rather than playing games, have guests share their advice or memories. Collect the cards and present them to the mom-to-be at the end of the shower in something she can use for the baby, such as a new diaper bag or a storage basket.

Step 4

Host the baby shower at a unique location that reflects a special hobby or interest of the mom-to-be, such as a pottery painting studio, a scrap-booking studio or a gourmet cooking studio. Guests can enjoy the activities the unique setting provides instead of playing shower games.

Tip

Balance your own hosting preferences with the likes and personality of the mom-to-be.
