Teach your dog to do a rock solid
Teach your dog to do a rock solid "Stay."

If you want your dog to do a rock solid "Sit" or "Down/Stay," you need to teach your dog a release command. The "Stay" command has a beginning and an ending. When you say "Stay" you begin the command. If you don't release your dog from the command and give it a clear ending, your dog will not develop a solid "Stay" command. After all, you can't expect your dog to read your mind and know exactly how long to stay put!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Treats
  1. Step 1

Give your dog the command "Stay" (Refer to my eHow article on how to teach your dog the "Stay" Command, see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Wait 30 to 60 seconds. If your dog attempts to move, place your dog back in the same position.

  3. Step 3

After the 30 to 60 seconds, get your dog's attention and give the release word "Break." Say the release word in a happy, positive tone of voice.

  4. Step 4

Reward your dog for doing the "Stay" command with treats and praise.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use any word you like for the release command. Some common ones people use are: "Break," "Free" or "Okay."
  • Always release your dog from a "Stay" command.
  • If you want your dog to stay for just a few seconds, use the word "Wait."

SAY LEAVE AGAIN GIVE HIM A TREAT SAY GOOD BOY REPEAT.
