1. Decide which category of board you’ll want (kneesurfer, longboard, short board).
Step2
2. Taking into account your height and body weight, decide on the specifications of the board.
Step3
3. Figure out which, if any, special features you want on your board (a foot-adjustable mast track, for instance).
Step4
4. Choose a board material (fiberglass, poly--often a function of price).
Step5
5. Decide on a sail type (light wind, slalom, wave, etc.).
Step6
6. Figure out which sail size will be appropriate for your size and the conditions under which you’ll normally be sailing.
Step7
7. Choose a sail material (mylar, monofilm, etc.).
Step8
8. Find a mast (carbon, aluminum, or fiberglass) that fits your sail. (You’ll want to make sure you can afford the mast type that’s “wedded” to your sail. These are very specific matches, so make sure your sail choice is a prudent one beforehand).
Step9
9. Pick out a universal joint and/or mast extender that matches your rig and board (if necessary).
Step10
10. Finally, choose a boom that suits your needs (carbon, aluminum, etc.).
