How to Train Your Dog to Come When Called

You can teach your dog to come when called by learning how to do the Recall Name Game. It's fun, easy and you and your dog will love this game. I'm sure you realize how important it is for your dog to come when called. If your dog gets loose, of course you want your dog to come right back--and even if your dog is outside playing in the yard--you'll want him to come back right back when you call. Here is how to "play" the Recall Name Game.

Things You'll Need:

• Friends
• Treats

1. Find some treats that your dog really loves. You may have to test a few different ones out.

2. Ask a couple of friends or relatives to help you teach your dog the command "come."

3. Find a large fenced-in area to practice such as a softball field or tennis court.

4. Have each person take a turn saying your dog's name and the command "come." When your dog comes to your friend, he or she should give the dog a treat.

5. The next person then calls your dog and does the same thing. Have your dog go to each person in no particular order.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure that everyone is having fun doing the Recall Name Game.
• Keep a happy tone of voice.
• Do this exercise on a long leash if you think your dog will run away.
