Not every work of fiction is worth adding to your personal library. It is better to skip buying that new sci-fi adventure when you can just borrow it for free. Next time you're in need of a recreational read, head to the public library. Before you go, check out the useful guidelines below.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Library card
  1. Step 1

Determine what you want to read. If you don't already have a title in mind, refer to best seller lists to see what's popular. Also browse reader's advisory Web sites and take recommendations from friends.

  2. Step 2

Locate your nearest library. While central libraries maintain the largest collection, branch libraries are conveniently located throughout big cities.

  3. Step 3

Head to your local library. Remember to take your library card and reading list.

  4. Step 4

Search the library catalog for the titles you're interested in reading. You may search by title, author, subject or keyword. Make sure the book isn't already checked out, and write down the call number. Take notice of any prefixes indicating that the book is shelved in a special area. Many libraries shelve mysteries, short stories and large print materials in their own sections.

  5. Step 5

Locate the books. Refer to a stack guide or ask for assistance to locate the fiction section. Books will be arranged alphabetically by author's last name.

  6. Step 6

Check out your books. Be sure to note the due date and understand the penalty for late returns.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have a current library card. If you don't, bring along a photo ID and documents that show your current address so that you may apply for a card.
  • Browse the new books section. This is a great way to locate best sellers and popular fiction.
  • If you don't have specific titles in mind, search using keywords describing subject matter you&re interested in. Use specific search terms to minimize your search results.
  • When looking for good fiction, consider recent movie releases. Many Hollywood blockbusters are based on great books.
  • Before you head to the library, visit the library Web site. Most allow access to the online catalog so you can check on the availability of a title. Also, this search will tell you which library branch has the book, borrowing policies and other useful information.
  • Bring money in case you have existing library fines to pay off.
