A Christmas cookie exchange is a wonderful way to celebrate the season and spend time with the people that you love. All of your guests will leave the party with memories of a lovely party, and a large container of delicious Christmas cookies to enjoy all holiday season!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large table
  • Christmas cookies
  • Invitations
  • Beverages of your choice
  • Half a dozen people to invite
  • Empty platter, or smaller dishes to hold cookies

    Planning the Party

  1. Step 1

Select a date in December for your party and invite people to the Christmas cookie exchange. It is ideal if you can plan the party several weeks in advance as the holiday season is a busy time for everyone's schedule.

  2. Step 2

Invite your guests and ask them to bring at least six cookies for every guest that you have invited. Also ask your friends to bring one dozen extra cookies to share at the party.

  3. Step 3

Consider asking your guests to bring the recipe for their chosen Christmas cookie on recipe cards to give to each guest.

  4. Step 4

Before the party, plan an activity for children that will keep them occupied during the party. An older teen could be asked to take a group of children to a local movie or out for pizza.

  5. Step 5

Decorate a large table to hold cookies. Add a pretty centerpiece perfect for the holidays. Place small plates or a large platter to hold the cookies that you will share at the party. Have plenty of room for the cookies you will divide up to take home.

  6. Step 6

Provide beverages that go perfectly with cookies. The time honored favorite of milk is always good. An adult choice great for the holidays is egg nog. Other choices are cider and coffee, espresso or tea.

  7. Holding the Party

  8. Step 1

Welcome everyone to your home and invite them to place their cookies on the table. Have them place a dozen out to share in the empty platter. The rest of the cookies can remain in the container for the Christmas cookie exchange.

  9. Step 2

Allow people to relax, mingle and enjoy themselves. Once 20 or 30 minutes have gone by and every guest is in the room, begin the exchange.

  10. Step 3

Ask each of your guests to share the "story" of their Christmas cookie recipe and then to have them go to the table to get cookies from the exchange. You might also ask your guests to consider sharing the recipe for their Christmas cookie, planning this ahead of time so everyone can have one written out on a card.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't consider yourself to be a great cook, ask a friend for a simple cookie recipe and try it a week ahead of time to test it out.
  • All cookies brought to the Christmas cookie exchange must be homemade. You can make up your own rules if you wish to, but a traditional Christmas cookie exchange has only homemade cookies.
  • Consider thinking of those less fortunate while doing a Christmas cookie exchange. Adding a canned food or toy drive to your party could be a nice touch.
