Work an internship at a studio. An internship is valuable in many ways. It not only allows a person to meet many people, it also provides the opportunity to get a hands-on education in an actual business setting.

Start networking as early as possible. Get to know everyone in the business. Befriend musicians, venue managers, music managers, technical people and more. Knowing people is a key part to this business.

Pick a genre of music and stay passionate about it. Get to know a genre of music inside and out, and get involved in everyway possible. Study the history of the genre, and think about where it might be headed in the future.
