Before there were major highways, people traveled from coast to coast on Route 66. You still can today, even by motorcycle! Here are some simple steps to go from Chicago to California traveling on Route 66 on a motorcycle.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Major credit cards and money
  • Valid motorcycle operator's license
  • Maps or city guides

Step1
Create a trip plan.
Step2
Get city guides to help with sightseeing ideas or for planning overnight accommodations.
Step3
Search the internet for locations that might interest you and make those stopping points.
Step4
Start your trip in Chicago, Illinois.
Step5
Get on Route 66 heading west.
Step6
Head towards Missouri and then on through the next states, consecutively: Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada.
Step7
Finish up in California.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget your camera.
  • The same trip can be made reversing the directions and going from California to Chicago.
  • Guided motorcycle tours are available for this trip and run in the summer months. Guided tours run for 16 days.
  • This trip is 3,455 miles from start to finish.
  • The ability to operate a motorcycle and ride for long periods of time is essential.
