Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Map of London
- Comfortable shoes
Step1
Buy a Travel Card from Underground (Tube) stations after nine in the morning when the price drops by half. If you are staying for a week or more, buy an Oyster Card, which gives you cheaper travel for an entire week.
Step2
Walk as much as possible. It is the best way to get a feel for the city and does wonders for your sense of direction. If you are exploring the central parts of London, you'll find most points of interest are near each other, so resist the temptation to board a bus.
Step3
Explore the back streets of London and discover top-notch cuisine at discount prices. Also, try market food. Borough Market and Camden Market are renowned for fine fare that won't break the bank.
Step4
Visit the free museums and art galleries. Beware of the cafes inside the museums, though. Many institutions compensate for the free admissions by charging as much as ten pounds for a sandwich.
Step5
Buy magazines which specialize in places to see and eat in London. In their pages, you will find many free musical events. Talented professional musicians often play in venues such the National Film Theater foyer and the National Gallery.
Step6
Drink alcohol in London and you risk running very low on cash. You may reward yourself with a glass of wine, if you stuck to your budget that day. Have a drink with friends at home before venturing out to avoid having to dig into your savings account for a beer.
