Things You'll Need:
- Carbon filter water pitcher
- Cheap vodka
-
Step 1
Buy a bottle of cheap vodka. Look on the bottom shelf. Perhaps it will be in a plastic jug with a little known brand name.
-
Step 2
Empty the water from your carbon filter water pitcher. You might want to put in a new filter if you haven't changed it for a while.
-
Step 3
Pour the vodka in the pitcher and let it pass through the filter. After the first pass, filter it again. Do this at least 5 times.
-
Step 4
Sniff and taste the vodka. It should be almost tasteless. If it still smells like gasoline, plastic or industrial waste, filter it some more.
-
Step 5
Drink up when you're satisfied the filter has done its job.

on 7/18/2008 I was going to try this, but was just advised NOT TO TRY THIS by a chemist, who said that "It isn't safe to filter vodka/spirits through a Brita filter .... [b/c] they are made of plastic and spirits will leach out toxic chemicals from the plastic that are inert when it filters water. Also there is more in the filters than activated charcoal and these resins and other substances also leach into the spirits. So while the vodka may taste smoother, it actually will now have more toxins in it."
Check out the convo here: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/474541 so at least you know whether YOU wanna try it. :-)
Good luck!

on 2/15/2008 Wow, what a simple yet ingenious idea. I'll have to try this next time I throw a party on a budget. Thanks.
