Things You'll Need:
- Paper and pen to take notes
- Friends, neighbors or co-workers for referrals
- Telephone
- Computer with Internet access
-
Step 1
Call the New Mexico Dental Association or visit its Web site to obtain a list of dental professionals in your area (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Ask for recommendations and referrals from friends, neighbors and co-workers. Ask what they like about their dentist and the office.
-
Step 3
Arrange a consultation. Question the dentist and staff members about how dental emergencies are handled, the types of procedures that can be completed in-office, their commitment to continuing education and their involvement in any professional associations.
-
Step 4
Set up an appointment for a general exam. This typically consists of a cleaning, X-rays and a review of your medical health history.
-
Step 5
Observe the office during your visit. Dental offices should be clean, orderly and convenient to your home or office, and the dental team should be friendly and professional, as well as considerate of your feelings and your time. Staff should also provide up-front information about pricing and payment plans before a treatment is scheduled.
