Follow these steps to get your teaching certification in the state of Washington.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the Web site of the Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) as your primary resource (see the Who Can Help section below) as you work toward your teaching license.

  2. Step 2

Meet the minimum criteria, which include being 18 years of age, passing a background check and fingerprint screen, and earning a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  3. Step 3

Take and pass the Washington Educator Skills Test-Basic (WEST-B). There are WEST-B exemptions, which include passing grades on Praxis I tests as well as the California Basic Skills Test.

  4. Step 4

Take and pass the WEST-E endorsement test in individual subject areas, or the Praxis II subject-area tests. You can complete this testing in the year after you get an initial license. To be exempt from taking these tests, you must pass the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

  5. Step 5

Make sure all documentation is in place and submit to the state certification office (OSPI). A certification specialist will review all relevant materials and determine if you qualify for a standard license.
