While Idaho prides itself on its small and friendly towns and cities, its school system is striving aggressively toward high standards in education. Follow the steps below to earn your Idaho teaching license and join this effort toward educational excellence.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the Web site of the Idaho State Department of Education as your primary resource (see the Who Can Help section below) as you work toward earning your teaching license.

  2. Step 2

Collect the necessary elements of the application packet. These include official transcripts from all colleges and universities ("official" means notarized or bearing a colored stamp that has an embossed and raised official seal), a completed fingerprint card, a completed professional experience report (if you have less than 2 years of experience as a certified professional), documentation of having met the requirements of the Educational Technology Assessment (ETA), evidence of having passed the PRAXIS II, the application form and payment.

  3. Step 3

Submit the application packet to: Teacher Certification, State Department of Education, P.O. Box 83720, Boise, Idaho 83720-0027.

  4. Step 4

Apply for reciprocity if you are from out of state. Use the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) and a 2004 rule that allows you to practice for 2 years in a mentored environment while you complete a computer-based certification through ABCTE.

Tips & Warnings
  • All categories of applicant must meet specific requirements to acquire a teaching license. Visit the Idaho State Department of Education Web site for all the details.
  • The rule that allows certification via ABCTE is temporary, so confirm the status of this certification with the Idaho State Department of Education before you apply for a license.
