Step1
Visit the Web site of the Alabama State Department of Education as your primary resource (see the Who Can Help section below).
Step2
Take and pass the Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program. This consists of the ACT WorkKeys assessment and Praxis II test.
Step3
Collect the necessary documentation for an initial application. This includes evidence of having passed the testing, documentation of graduation from a teaching program at a regionally accredited college or university and completion of the fingerprinting and background checks. Submit your packet of documents to the Alabama State Department of Education.
Step4
Collect the necessary documentation to apply for reciprocity if you have a license from another state. Alabama has reciprocity with all U.S. states that have comparable certification. Alabama also accepts the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification Interstate Contract (NSADTEC). Applicants must have completed 3 years of satisfactory work out of the prior 7 to qualify.
