The hospitality and amenities of Georgia's 63 state parks and historic sites will make you feel right at home. Georgia's barrier islands and coastal historic sites offer campers a balmy, placid respite from modern life. Campgrounds in the Blue Ridge Mountains provide an exciting blend of ancient Native American structures and up-to-date facilities. Campers can also choose to stay just minutes from Atlanta, one of America's most energetic southern cities.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wilderness survival guide
  • Medical kit
  • Water
  • Reservation
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera
  • Maps

Step1
Decide where you want to camp in Georgia. Choose between the mountains, forests, beaches or sites near Atlanta.
Step2
Visit the Georgia State Parks Web site (see Resources, below) and learn more about the 41 state parks which have more than 2700 campsites available. The Web site has maps of each state park and information about the amenities available at each one.
Step3
Reserve your campsite up to 11 months in advance of your arrival date. Most reservations can be made online, but a select few state parks only accept telephone reservations.
Step4
Learn more about activities offered by downloading electronic publications from the Georgia State Parks Web site. The site provides a monthly events calendar.
Step5
Send your deposit in advance or you can lose your reservation.
Step6
Purchase an Annual Park Pass, if you plan to go on several camping trips to Georgia. The Park Pass exempts you from paying the daily parking fee. History buffs would also be smart to purchase the History Pass for all of the 15 state historic sites.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember your reservation confirmation number when you check in at the campsite. You should aim to check in between 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on the reserved arrival date.
  • Check out Georgia's little Grand Canyon. Providence Canyon State Park is featured on many U-Haul trucks across America. Also, the beautiful southern Georgia's barrier islands offer a fabulously rich cultural experience along with the laid back charm of the Gulf Coast.
  • Pick up some delicious pecans or peaches when in season.
