1
Plan all meals and snacks ahead of time to avoid quick stops at fast-food restaurants and vending machines. Many meals can be packed into a cooler and either eaten in the car, at a picnic table in a park or at a roadside rest stop.
-
2
Take a vehicle that gets good gas mileage. If your car doesn't, consider renting one. Many car rental companies offer deals with up to half off for long weekends.
-
-
3
Find cheap accommodations. This can be done by researching and booking your hotel accommodations ahead of time. For the ultimate savings, pack camping gear and find campgrounds along the way. This can cost as little as a few dollars per night.
-
4
Do some research ahead of time to discover where the cheapest gas prices are located. Although the difference may only be a few cents per gallon, this will add up quickly over the course of the whole trip.
-
5
Find cheap destinations and cheap activities. Avoid roadside malls and expensive destinations. There are many things to do which may cost little to nothing, such as state parks, fairs and local festivals.
-
6
Prepare for the unexpected. Bring along anything that may be needed last minute, such as batteries for the camera, first aid, a spare tire or clothes for inclement weather.

The question is does renting a fuel efficient vehicle save you money? It could save you precious months on an older engine, but there is a good overhead to most rentals from insurance to fees. -
