The Board of Bar Examiners of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire administers the New Hampshire bar examination twice annually. Because the bar examination is offered on the last Tuesday and Wednesday in February and July only, it is essential for you to complete your bar application on time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Review New Hampshire Supreme Court Rule 42, which governs admission to the state bar, to determine your eligibility for the upcoming examination (see Who Can Help below).

  2. Step 2

Visit the State of New Hampshire Web site to download the bar exam application and accompanying forms (see Who Can Help below).

  3. Step 3

Commit your schedule to completing the application well within the filing deadlines, December 1 for the February exam and May 1 for the July exam.

  4. Step 4

Complete the application, petition and questionnaire, certification form and authorization and release form. Make sure everything is there. The application consists of an application for the New Hampshire bar examination, a petition and questionnaire for the Bar of New Hampshire, a certification form and an authorization and release form.

  5. Step 5

Double-check for errors and omissions. Get your application and authorization and release form notarized. Keep a photocopy of your completed and notarized application for your records.

  6. Step 6

Attach to your notarized application the appropriate application fee, a passport photo, two copies each of your college and law school diplomas and one photocopy of the entire application.

  7. Step 7

Mail the entire application and supplementary materials to the Office of the Clerk of Court for the New Hampshire Supreme Court well within the stated deadlines for the desired bar examination date.

  8. Step 8

Supplement your application, if necessary, with copies of your law diploma and changes to your original application.

  9. Step 9

Notify the two individuals who will serve as your character references, as the Character and Fitness Committee will likely contact them. Remember that they should not be related to you by blood or marriage.

Tips & Warnings
  • The application may be printed or typewritten. Some of the forms can be filled out directly online and printed.
  • New Hampshire offers special testing accommodations for specific circumstances set forth in Supreme Court Rule 42(3)(b)-(c). Submit a request in writing before the application deadline.
  • All fees associated with filing your bar examination application are nonrefundable.
