How to Apply for the Indiana Bar Exam

The Indiana Board of Bar Examiners administers the Indiana bar examination on the last Tuesday and Wednesday in the months of February and July. Because the test is offered twice a year only, it is essential that the bar application be fully completed and submitted in a timely manner. The Indiana bar exam application consists of a questionnaire, three reference letters, a fingerprint card, a passport photograph, a driving report and a Form C3.

Step1
Read the Indiana Rules for Admission to the Bar and the Discipline of Attorneys to make sure you are eligible to sit for the desired bar examination (see Who Can Help below).
Step2
Download a copy of the Indiana bar exam application from the Board of Bar Examiners' Web site (see Who Can Help below).
Step3
Commit your schedule to completing the application well within the stated deadlines. November 15 is the deadline for the February exam; April 1 is the deadline for the July exam.
Step4
Complete the entire Indiana Bar Application directly online using Adobe Reader. Double-check the application for errors and omissions.
Step5
Get the completed application and accompanying documents notarized.
Step6
Photocopy the entire application and all attachments, including the three reference letters.
Step7
Attach to your application the required fee, three reference letters, a passport photograph, a fingerprint card, driving records from each jurisdiction where you held a valid driver's license and a copy of the entire application and its attachments.
Step8
Mail the application to the Indiana State Board of Law Examiners well within the stated deadlines for the desired bar exam.
Step9
Complete your Character and Fitness Interview within 30 days of your test date. You will receive information on arranging this interview when your application is processed.
Step10
Supplement the application with your law school transcript and Form C3, the Dean's Certification, within 20 days of taking the bar examination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fingerprint cards are available at your local police station or law enforcement agency for a nominal fee.
  • Special testing accommodations are provided in specific circumstances. If desired, submit the designated form and medical documentation of your situation along with the bar exam application.
  • Keep a copy of the application for your records.
  • Incomplete bar applications will not be processed.
  • The application fee must be in the form of a certified check, cashier's check or money order. Personal checks are not accepted.
  • An additional fee must be received with applications received after the deadline, no later than November 30 for the February exam and April 15 for the July exam.
