The Colorado Board of Bar Examiners Law Committee administers the Colorado bar examination in the Denver metropolitan area. The application for admission consists of a cover page, application questionnaire, ethnic survey and law school graduation certificate. Because the exam is offered twice a year only, on the last Tuesday and Wednesday in the months of February and July, you must submit the application on time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Review the rules governing admission to the Colorado bar found in the Colorado Rules of the Supreme Court 201.1 through 201.14 to ensure you are eligible to sit for the upcoming bar exam.
Step2
Download a current bar exam application from the Supreme Court of Colorado Web site (see Who Can Help below).
Step3
Review the application deadlines for the desired test date and commit your schedule to completing the application in a timely manner.
Step4
Complete all sections of the application online, accurately and thoroughly, including the application questionnaire and ethnic survey. Double-check your application for errors and omissions.
Step5
Decide whether you want to take the essay portion of the bar exam on your own laptop computer.
Step6
Get your verification and authorization forms notarized.
Step7
Attach to the application the required fee, statement of verification, authorization and release, law school certification form and laptop form and fee, if necessary.
Step8
Mail your application well within the stated deadlines for the desired bar exam.

Tips & Warnings

  • The cover page to your application may be completed in pen. The remainder of the application should be completed online and printed for mailing.
  • If you are not a law school graduate when you submit your application, ensure the verification form is completed within 15 days of your graduation.
  • Colorado offers special testing accommodations for specific circumstances. Visit the Colorado Supreme Court Web site (see Who Can Help below) to request a form.
  • Keep a copy of your application for your records.
  • The background investigation is independent of the bar admission application and need not be conducted prior to the examination. However, if the background check is not completed before exam results are released, you will not be eligible to take the oath.
  • Faxed or scanned copies of the bar application will not be accepted.
