Since running water is not something you can go without when moving from one home to another, it might make your life easier to set up a transfer of service with your current water company from your old home to your new home. Here's how to set that up.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Local telephone directory
  • Computer with Internet access
  • Telephone
  • Credit card or checking account for fees

Step1
Locate the phone number for your water company.
Step2
Give the representative on the phone your new address so they can verify that the location is within their service area.
Step3
If the location is within their service area, find out if a transfer application is needed.
Step4
Fill out the transfer application and send it back to the company.
Step5
Provide any additional information, such as your new address and phone number, as well as a service turn-on date for your new home and a service turnoff date for your old home.
Step6
Verify that the correct information is given so there is no delay in service.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of calling, try locating the Web site address. There may be an online form or transfer application you can fill out.
  • If you are no longer within your current water company's service area, contact your realtor to find out which water companies provide service in your new area.
  • Be prepared to pay a service transfer fee while setting up the transfer. You might also be able to add it to your next bill.
  • Follow these steps as soon as you know you are moving to have continuous water service.
