Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Survey the Maryland State House, the oldest capitol building in the country still housing state government. Built in 1779, this historic icon represents an important time in our country's history and is a must-see for anyone visiting Annapolis.
Step2
Wander around the campus of St. John's College, whose roots go back to King Williams' School founded in 1696. The charter of St. John's reflects the birth of our country as a democracy, including the principle that one's religion not be a test for admission.
Step3
Investigate the maritime heritage of Annapolis, which made the city very prosperous in its early years. The bulk of maritime shipping eventually moved to Baltimore. Oystering in the Chesapeake was an important industry until the 1850s. Today Annapolis is known for its pleasure boating and has earned the nickname "America's Sailing Capital."
Step4
Tour the city by horse and carriage. Enjoy the beauty and diversity of Annapolis while being lectured on its history.
Step5
Inspect the United States Naval Academy, started in 1845. The Academy's mission is to develop midshipmen "morally, mentally and physically." The Academy's 338-acre campus has been designated a national historic landmark.
