Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Wander through the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. The library contains historical materials documenting his candidacy and presidency, gifts from world leaders and photographs of the Carter family during their years in the White House. Call (404) 865-7114 to arrange a group tour.
Step2
Descend into underground Atlanta, which originally served as a railroad. In the 1920s, Atlanta constructed new bridges to replace those built to cross railroad tracks. These raised, concrete bridges created a lower level known as underground Atlanta. The site today serves as a retail center with stores, restaurants and entertainment.
Step3
Take a tour of Emory University, conceived in 1836. The college is located in the upscale community of Druid Hills. Emory's faculty represents 100 countries and serves a student body of 11,000 students. Visit the quadrangle and keep your eyes open for Swoop, Emery's mascot.
Step4
Explore the Georgia State Capitol, a historical landmark built on a 5-acre lot in the late 19th century. Call (404) 656-2844 for tour information.
Step5
Take a walking tour of Atlanta's historic district. The tours offer a great education on the history of Atlanta and the people who pioneered its growth. Contact the Atlanta Preservation Center at (404) 688-3350.
Step6
Stroll down Sweet Auburn Avenue, the center of African-American business and culture in the early 1900s. This area includes the 4-block Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Site, home to Dr. King's birth home.
