Denver, Colorado, founded by gold prospectors in 1858, was named after the governor of Kansas, who also governed the Denver territory (while it was still part of Kansas). The Denver of today is popular because of its dry and mild climate, central location and architectural and natural beauty. Read on for tips on visiting the state capital of Colorado.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drink in the Flying Dog Brewery. The brewery was started by two men who swear they both witnessed something resembling a flying dog one night. Their vision turned into a company that now sells over 400,000 cases of beer a year. Bring your sense of humor and an ID for both a tour and some time in the tasting room.

  2. Step 2

Take your feet on a downtown Denver walking tour, complete with a host who will teach you about Denver's history. You will make outdoor stops at such historic sites as the state capitol building and Trinity Methodist Church. Call (303) 571-9456 for tour information.

  3. Step 3

Sweeten your day with a trip to Hammond's Candies, opened in 1920. The original recipes are still used and much of the candy is still handmade. Call (303) 333-5588 to arrange a factory tour.

  4. Step 4

Trot over to the Platte River Trolley and take a tour of Denver on the "Breezer." Inhale some Rocky Mountain air and learn about Denver while enjoying the outdoors. Call (303) 458-6255 for more information.

  5. Step 5

Take a "Venice on the Creek" punt ride down the Cherry Creek Waterway in lower downtown Denver. The operator of the boat uses a pole to navigate as he talks about Denver's history. Learn about the punts, which are manufactured in Cambridge, England.
