In the past several years, over 400 new hookah bars have opened in the United States. Despite public smoking bans, hookah bars or lounges, also known as shisha cafes, are permitted to operate in most U.S. cities by obtaining a special license. Hookah lounges are places where visitors can enjoy music and Middle Eastern cuisine, while smoking a hookah pipe. Particularly popular in college towns, most hookah bars do not serve alcohol. Finding a hookah bar in your area is fairly simple.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Hookah bar or lounge in your area
  1. Step 1

Learn about the hookah. A hookah is water pipe filled with tobacco. The tobacco is flavored with molasses that is added to the pipe before you light up. The flavors can be anything from apples to cinnamon to chocolate. The hookah pipe is placed in the middle of the table at the lounge or cafe and usually has multiple hoses for communal smoking. One bowl of tobacco and molasses will probably last about 45 minutes with two people smoking it. The price per bowl varies considerably.

  2. Step 2

Search on the Internet for hookah directories. There are many hookah bar directories on the Web, where you can locate a hookah bar or lounge in your area. Using your favorite search engine, type "find a hookah bar" in the search box. The results will be several hookah directories.

  3. Step 3

Explore the hookah bar directory. On most hookah bar directories, you will see listings for hookah bars and lounges by state. The listings normally include locations, descriptions, prices and hours.

  4. Step 4

Enjoy the communal smoking of the hookah pipe while spending time conversing with friends, listening to music and enjoying delicious food.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try putting ice in the glass base of your hookah and get the water ice cold before smoking. This makes for a smoother more enjoyable smoking experience.
  • Always use a disposable mouthpiece to smoke the hookah pipe. For hygiene reason, using a disposable mouthpiece in public places is recommended.
