Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Find a club near you by going to the Toastmasters International Web site. There can be several different clubs in one city, and they meet at various times on different days at different locations. Find one that is right for you, or call (949) 858-8255 for assistance.
Step2
Go to a meeting at one or more of the clubs, and see if you feel relaxed around the members. Public speaking requires courage for many of us, and it will help if you are surrounded by people that make you feel comfortable.
Step3
Apply for membership at the club. Toastmasters is a non-profit organization, so the fees are quite reasonable.
Step4
Get ready to start public speaking. You will be required to give short speeches on several subjects, after which the group will offer constructive criticism. You will also receive various resources on public speaking.
Step5
Attempt to be at all the meetings. The more you practice, the better you will become. Attending meetings every week will help your speaking skills and will also help you build business and social relationships.
Step6
Learn leadership skills by staying involved. Toastmasters has every member take turns at planning and running the meetings. They also teach you how to motivate others.
Step7
Run for office once you have become comfortable with the organization. Elections vary with each club, but generally are every six months or annually. In addition, there are leadership positions for Area and District councils that oversee the individual clubs.
