South Africa is known as one of the most beautiful countries in the world. In order to experience the country to its full potential, it is important to have a sense of independence. The public transit system is not as clear as it is in some countries, but there are still many ways of getting around.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Decide on the form of transport you will take: taxi, bus or Kombi.
Step2
Signal for a taxi. This is as straightforward as it sounds!
Step3
Look for the bus stops called mynah bus stops in cities like Durban and Cape Town. Other bus stops are clearly marked as well.
Step4
Check to see which direction the bus is going. This can be seen on the front of the bus.
Step5
Tell the bus driver where you are going and he will quote the fee accordingly.
Step6
Take a Kombi, which is slightly more complicated. Kombis are mini-bus type vehicles in South Africa, which are occasionally very brightly colored. You will notice many people lining up to get into them.
Step7
Ask the driver where the Kombi is going. They are fairly cheap.

Tips & Warnings

  • Travel lightly and do not display any jewelry or valuables.
  • Always ask bus drivers for help. Everyone speaks English.
  • Always carry change. The bus and Kombi drivers rarely have change.
  • Although the political situation in South Africa is settling down at the moment, caution must always be taken when traveling by public transit.
  • Always check to see where the bus or Kombi is going.
  • Public transit should not be taken after dusk. It can be dangerous.
