Rate: (2 Ratings)

Learning a new language on your own allows you to set your own learning schedule. You can speed through topics that you find easy and spend more time on topics that may be mentioned only briefly by an instructor. Follow these steps to learn a new language on your own.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Flash cards
  • Study tools
  • Language dictionary or textbook

Step1
Choose a helpful study tool for your chosen language. Depending on your learning style, you may prefer a textbook, CD-rom series or online tools. Choose the one that fits your needs.
Step2
Go through each lesson at least once and then try completing any exercises provided for that lesson. Treat the exercises like a test. Make a note of any questions that you skipped or were unsure of. Read the section of the lesson that is related to any skipped questions before trying them again.
Step3
Memorize the vocabulary and grammar rules found in a lesson. Before you begin a lesson, make a list of vocabulary words or grammar rules that will be discussed. Make flash cards to help you memorize these words and rules.
Step4
Create a schedule and stick with it. Choose specific days and times to devote to learning a new language. Study for an hour every day or two hours two or three days a week. Make sure to choose a day and time you can commit to.
Step5
Enlist a study buddy. A study partner does not need to be learning the language with you. This person can help you review flash cards, quiz you on grammar rules and be there to encourage you along the way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember, it takes time and devotion to learn a new language. Don't try to rush things.
  • Look forward to each lesson. Remember, you want to learn!
  • Keep flash cards with you throughout the day so you can review them for a few minutes several times a day.
